Swift and Whitmore limited acquired George Jowitt and Sons Ltd, a manufacturer of resin bonded grinding wheels based in Chesterfield. The acquisition took place in the last quarter of 2016 and makes the business the largest independent manufacturer of grinding products in the UK
Jowitt has been in business since 1920 as specialist manufacturers of discs, segments and wheels for surface grinding in the following industries: Automotive Component, Bearing, Machine Knives, spring, Steel and Foundry, Hand Tool, Cutlery and many more.
Jowitt manufactures both resin bonded tamped and pressed product. The tamped process has a much shorter curing cycle than the pressed product which gives the business competitive advantage over the manufactures of similar product overseas.
The business had been engaged on research and development of epoxy wheels and now has developed a substantial market for the products. We are the biggest producer of grinding segments in the UK at our Halesowen site and Chesterfield sites which supply the automotive and the knife sharpening industries. We have also made significant development with our rail grinding products and are testing our latest developments in Africa.
